Why create poetic or meaningful Architecture? From the xs to the XL

A research to establish an argument on why to break the box and a personal definition why I want to pursue this. Personal frustration with society and their acceptance of whatever.

Research recommended:

Christopher Alexander - A pattern language
Alain de Botton - The Architecture of Happiness
Fine Homebuilding - magazine
Craftmanship
Pride of place
Life-cycle cost
Client education
The Geography of Nowhere - James Howard kunzler
Google - "the role of the critics"

I will be revisiting a good old book titled "Poetics of Architecture - Theory of Design" by Anthony C. Antoniades.

How can you infuse your vision into every element of professional practice?

Pictures are worth a thousand words! This was an incredible exercise, especially after we all gathered to review each others thoughts. It made me think about the different levels of how, when and where meaningful Architecture occurs.

What's on my mind?

The label "intensive cohort" is definetely being squeezed to its limits this week. As students pursuing a Master in Architecture we are being challenged both intellectually and physically. More by choice than by someone forcing us to do it. I mean, we all have choices and could pursue the challenges we are presented rather comfortably. Instead, we are choosing to be competitive in some sort of way with one another and with the challenge presented. I relate my experience with the question: What type of Architect do we want to be and what type of Architecture do we want to create? What could we do as professionals to further develop our careers and to keep pushing and advancing the field of Architecture. Architecture is so much more than shelter or a mere building to be occupied. Without us, a building will be lifeless. No animation.

I don't see creating typical structures or designs that mimic what's existing in order to blend as been the norm. Somehow our structures reflect where we are heading, whether that's right or wrong. Who is to say what is right or wrong, they both exist like good and evil, but how do we judge or admit what's right.

Previous readings on Duncan and Bickford have made me think deeper about the importance of our societies, economies and politics as an important role on what we create. I never saw the vulnebarility of the word "place" previous to reading "The narrative form of Place and Place relationships" by Herb Childress. It made me think about other things I did not see, like the word "Celebrate". This word on my project take two different meanings: Celebration as a personal emotion at the point of arrival as well as to celebrate the existing Architecture. Readings such as the narrative of form again, have made me identify or place this in the context of a City.

Although a bit exhausted, I look forward to my next challenge and more enlightment of so many things we are learning. Meeting everyone has been a great experience and a return to what a humble experience it is to feel that strangers of a few months ago are all helping and looking out for one another.

Landscape Taste as a Symbol of Group Identity

The landscape taste writing is strong evidence of the socio economic groups of past and today’s societies. Duncan’s writing is a perfect example of segregation without physical barriers. In this case segregation is not viewed as ethnic, but rather of financial status, therefore establishing social boundaries - social boundaries that could only be penetrated through filtering levels of acceptance. Both, the Alpha and Beta create their own interpretation of “Utopia”, these utopias established rules their societies follow, similar to what we see today in Planned Unit and Common interest developments known as “Associations”.

The analogy to the Associations is not to define color or regulations for the Architecture per se, but to make reference and comparison do’s and don’ts - who lives here and who doesn’t. I remember when we bought our first home in a PUD; we had to have a credit check to see if we were able to afford the association’s fee!, work information to see our stability, and also a background check to see if had any previous problems with the law.

The similarity between Duncan’s and Bickford’s writing about what is considered the outside vs. the inside is exposure to the unexpected, seen from each group as the exposure outside their Utopias and a different democratic citizenship. Their reactions to each other’s social networks are comparable to oil and water. Who is to say what is correct?

How would each of these societies treat the laborers, the person with the minimum wage or food stamps? They will probably be more acceptable to each other if there is a third element introduced (the less fortunate).

The Abject or less fortunate is a term commonly used for people who are of low income and of less opportunity. That label creates a level of guilt, but why should we feel guilt or remorse towards this group of individuals? Some of them have chosen to be part of that society. As people on past posts have mentioned, I would feel vulnerable in their Dystopias.

Who controls the political decisions of the town at the Village Hall if Government is a single entity for both? The Alpha’s or the Beta’s? Who should look after our rules and regulations of our Utopias, Republicans or Democrats? Ralph Nader? Working in Architecture for the publicly funded projects vs. the private sector is also a good example to where we belong. Who do we want to be as Architects or Planners?

A few years ago I worked in Architectural practices that catered to the Government projects (Airports, schools, etc). They were very exciting projects and made me feel I was contributing to the society where the project was located. But frustration set in when politics got involved and projects were canceled from one day to the other. I always felt it was such a waste of tax payers’ money. Since then I moved to work for the private sector where I see more fruition to Architecture.

That said, since my job is involved with multi-family residential, we still experience a form of Government. I frequently attend public zoning hearings and meetings with the planning and zoning department for project approval.

As I meet with planning and zoning departments, social networks come into play. Immediate neighbors to the projects have a saying on what should be built or not. “Neighborhood compatibility” does not necessarily define a style of Architecture, but if you try to place a contemporary building on a street where the Spanish revival predominates, then you might as well throw money in the garbage.

As Duncan states “Although the newer buildings are traditional in design, they fail to appear old enough for many residents of the alpha landscape”. This is always frustrating as an Architect. A common term in Florida is Mediterranean Architecture; I always challenge people and ask them to specify which type of Mediterranean. It could be Greek, Moroccan, Italian, Spanish, Turkish, etc. The Real estate market is also affected by the Alpha’s and the Betas. Florida’s real estate market and project sales are by far more solid with the older generation, the baby boomers. A house or condominium building has better chances of selling their property to the affluent than if it was a contemporary structure. The Real estate market argues that this type of Architecture is more secure, that they don’t have to worry about the unexpected. In this case, the unexpected will be, “What if it doesn’t sell because is not traditional?” “Love of the old, no matter how ugly, seems to be characteristic of Yankees as well of Englishmen”, this is something that has been picked up by many other ethnic groups as well.

The Architecture is creating a hostile environment for the development of democratic imagination and participation. As a result, segregation is created. The outside as a dimension of human experience is an extent of our inside behavior and upbringing.

This reading raises a question for me in regards to the location of the Landscape State within our cities. The north vs. the south! In this case, living in New York City and its density. The Alphas will be located on smaller buildings with a larger footprint adjacent to East of Central Park, and the Betas closer to the Hub because they could not afford the less dense structures. If we were to take the same roles and place it in the urban portion of Miami, then the Alphas will be in the more dense building structures to take advantage of the view. The Betas will have to settle for the smaller structures with less density, and for views, you will have to hop in your car and go east.

Constructing Inequality: City Spaces and the Architecture of Citizenship

Great reading! Above is a picture I took at one of our jobs in Fisher Island, Florida. It's amazing how accustomed we get to what we think is the norm. My thoughts on the article of "Outside, in the presence of Strangers" is that perhaps the public realm has not been lost, but it has evolved to a different plateau or different shape. We no longer have to be out of the heaven of our homes to be exposed. This blog for example out of the security of my home is allowing me to be part of the public realm. Virtual spaces like "You Tube or My space", etc. are creating a different type of experiences. They lack touch, smell, interaction. This exposure creates a mask of unending experiences. Companies like Bacardi and Apple are paying as well as users to be on spaces such as "Second life".

As I read thru "Inside, policing boundaries" I concurred on the existence of the three general types of gated communities (Lifestyle, Elite and Security Zone), but I could think of a fourth one (The Real Estate). The Real Estate type of gated community is very similar to the Security Zone, except that it could occur within existing good neighborhoods. This Real Estate gated community is typically the result of an area located within a City Hub where it was abandoned or allowed to deteriorate due to economic shifts or industrial moves. Realtors as well as Citizens have organized to create physical boundaries and limit the economic market to boost the sales price of the dwellings. Ultimately, the end result is to recuperate what was once lost to the local economy.

The creation of gated communities is also the result of social migration to this Nation. Miami has a fairly recent municipality (El Doral) created as a result of families immigrating from economic and political challenges in Central and South America. Developers utilize marketing tactics to take advantage of buyers by claiming land scarcity. McKenzie's analysis of developments reacting to land scarcity is an item that developers have exploited to get the best Bang for your Buck!

"The City-Shaping Category" "Both old downtowns that have been revitalized and new edge cities display the qualities of increasingly policed versions of Public space". Cities such as London with their CCTV monitoring makes me feel like the citizens don't have permission to freely participate in the public realm. What if I wanted to stand on top of a bench? I probably couldn't because of Prickly space, and if I was able to, the little camera will have me running away from the black hats! Regardless, it's a Great City, if you haven't been, try to see it in this lifetime.

The Private and The Public - "The putatively private realm of the home often affords less privacy to women than to men" and "The prevalence of black women's employment as domestics, where the norm was the public place of employment". I would tend to disagree with this comment, perhaps half a century ago I think it would be a valid point. The dwellings of today have changed so contracted domestics maids are no longer part of the middle or upper class, only the super rich. Perhaps if you live in one of the countries of the Americas, the possibility for maid service still affordable. I think that we could all see this in the way the floor plan for new dwellings have changed, our floor spaces and kitchens have been reorganized to plans of open flow.

Page 364 "describes the notion of privacy as a simple screen for oppression. The statement of home is idealized as a place of nurturance and Safety". As I mentioned on my opening paragraph, people or citizens exposed themselves within the security of their homes to virtual space. This is a revert of what we think the norm is. We are living the public realm on a virtual world, products like MP3 players, cell phones, etc. are actually making us create portable private spaces on what is considered the public life. This is further impeding us from interacting as a society.

IV. Theorizing Change. this section should include diagrams or a few Glenlivet! for now I could tell you all that as "Metropolitanist Critique" suggests, regional decision making by small municipalities and neighborhood assemblies are more empowering by far. As a result of their involvement and up keeping of the neighborhood, the community is emotionally encouraged to come out and do their yards, chat with their neighbors, attend regularly scheduled events, exercise and casual conversation with walking strangers.

Preamble

Welcome everyone!
A test of materials or creating emotional experiences? Regardless, it was a great surprise to find this while lost in a city.
